The Docket: August 16th 2026
AI in the dock, platforms on notice, and a pastor's chatbot diagnosis: Court's in session. Each month we bring you The Docket: Lawsuits of the month.
AI & Copyright
It’s been a long time coming, the largest known U.S. copyright payout is now complete. Anthropic reached final approval on a $1.5 billion settlement with authors who alleged the company downloaded and stored unauthorized copies of their books, amounting to roughly $3,000 per title across an estimated half a million works.
Anthropic is not safe from lawsuits yet though, as music publishers Concord and Universal Music Publishing have expanded their 2023 lawsuit against Anthropic, now alleging that the company's own internal trainers prompted Claude to generate song lyrics. The publishers are seeking $150,000 per song across approximately 500 titles.
Social Media & Minor Safety
Snap settled allegations that its platform was engineered to be addictive to minors, joining YouTube and TikTok in resolving claims before a scheduled Los Angeles trial. Shortly after, the Florida teenager who brought the parallel case against Meta dropped his claim without receiving any payment, effectively ending a second bellwether trial just days before jury selection was due to begin.
AI Liability
OpenAI and Sam Altman are facing a lawsuit from a former Florida pastor who alleges that ChatGPT repeatedly advised him to rest at home rather than consult a doctor about dizziness and elevated blood pressure — symptoms that were later diagnosed as a pulmonary embolism. The chatbot reportedly told him his symptoms were minor and invoked religious framing in its responses.
Talent & Contracts
Warner Bros. Discovery is suing Amazon, alleging it orchestrated what the studio describes as an unlawful executive recruitment campaign, including offers to indemnify departing employees against legal action. The suit centers on the hiring of marketing executive Pia Barlow more than a year before her contract was set to expire, with reports suggesting Amazon is also pursuing HBO's head of drama series and films.
